Final Post

May 8, 2007

There is a couple of things I learned about doing this final script. First off I learned to write in slang. When I first started writing my final script I got done with the first page and read it back. My first thought was “nobody talks like that”. So, I revised it with some slang, and a couple of “F” Bombs. Another thing I learned is how to arise conflict through diolouge. The cool thing about writting scripts is that you can make anything happen. I rather enjoyed writting this script. The only thing that gets confusing is the formatting. I also learned that in script writting there is a lot of revision involved, but thats the cool part about it. You can change things to make it better or to change your outcome. Well, as this is my last blog entry, I wish everyone the best of luck in the future!

Network vs. Cable

May 6, 2007

Network and Cabe televison shows differ in many ways.  The main way that i can tell the diffrence in styles is ther authenticity of laguage bewtween the charicters.  Cabe televison does not require editing for grotesc content, where network channles have to.  The charicters on cable televison get to respond to people people and situations in a real life way, being that there is no restrictions to what a person says in real life.  Network programing has to finde unatural ways to make the charicters seem like they are acting natural when they are not.  Editing and limitations on content are what keeps network televison wholesome and clean, but in some cases hinder the flow and emotion of the show.  HBO programs that are not cencored and edited seem to be the shows that are most popular right now, the Supranos, Entorage, and Sex and the City, when it was on HBO, were and are huge sucesses because of their authenticty.  I perfer to watch Cable chanel shows because of the lack of commercials and the authenticity of the charicters givn their situation.  Although the situations are fictional and lots of times unbelievably fake, the charicter put in the position has a real life experience being portrayed.

Commercials

April 23, 2007

It’s no secret that the prime-time network shows are built for commericals. The shows are built to bring in a large demographic and bring big bucks to the major networks. Personally i’m not a big fan of network shows, I prefer cable shows such as Sopranos or The Wire. The writing and quality production on cable shows is held to a much higher standard. If you are going to pay monthly for HBO there better be a reason for it. Network shows require a lot of razzle dazzle and smoke an mirrors to keep you interested. It’s becoming more and more common these days that a popular network show has to bow out awkwardly because a network has extended it to long, and never really thought about drawing out the show based on a specific conclusion.

Networks vs. cable

April 17, 2007

We began to discuss in class the different challenges in writing for network television and the cable market.  The success of program serialization on networks such as HBO has challenged the traditional 4 or 5 act structure of commercial-interrupted dramas.  How do you think the commercial paradigm has affected the development of the weekly television show?  What might have been different if the 4 act structure had not been adopted?

The man in this picture is our second character.  Add comments to this post and create a comprehensive and believable background for him while building on the previous comments of your classmates.  Have fun and be creative!

LOL

Here is our first subject for the assignment as discussed in class.  Add comments to this post to build a cumulative background and personality for this character.  What is she thinking?  Where did she come from?  How might she deal with a stressful situation?  Remember that consistency is the key; build on your classmate’s comments to create a believable character.

Writing Online

March 27, 2007

Forums, blogs, emails and chats have become almost routine as millions of us cruise the internet on a daily basis. The most writing experience I have online is related to the sports teams I have followed since I was a kid. I frequently check www.49erswebzone.com at least 3-4 times daily to see what’s happening with my Niners. As a member on that website since 2004, I have made over 2,500 posts on their forum. Wow, I just realized that’s a lot of online writing. A blog that I check daily is “Instant 49ers”, written by Matt Maiocco who covers the 49ers for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. This was my first experience of a blog and I really enjoyed how he answered the feedback that readers would give him at the end of his writings.

Writing online is less structured compared to script or even story writing. Visiting forums or blogs, I notice that many people have different writing styles and express ideas much differently. I enjoy online writing because it seems more spontaneous and less prepared, almost like speaking to people face to face.

Born into new media

March 27, 2007

I feel that it is almost difficult to look back and reflect on how drastically technology is changing because we are a generation that is changing with technology. Our parents would probably have an easier time reflecting on how much it has changed but we were born into new media. I feel that, as a generation, we are adapting everyday without notice to the constantly moving media and technology.  It is not a burden but a helping hand in our everyday lives so it goes unnoticed.

Oh boy do I ever remember how cool it was when my house got AOL and we were able to log on to the Internet. The melodic tones of your modem and house phone line romancing each other so you could gain access to a whole almost empty universe of information. I was a kid when I first gain access to the Internet so I spent most of my time in chat rooms or talking to my friends on AIM. My use for the Internet has changed because I have changed. I have different needs of the Internet now that i’m older, but my primary use of the Internet is still keeping in touch with my friends. Secondly I use the net to get information, learn things, help me with school projects. Thirdly I use the Internet for entertainment purposes such as you-tube or downloading music.

The Internet has had a huge impact on our culture and the way we learn. It is not as important to retain all the details of general topics, because it is a culture that can with ease google a topic and get the information they need. With people using the Internet rather than their brains to retain information, and using tools such as Google to help them recall that information. In should be important for kids in middle school who are now using the Internet as a learning tool, to learn media literacy. They need to be taught the tools to read and filter what they are reading on the Internet and interpret what is cogent and what isn’t.

Ali’s Bloggings

March 26, 2007

The internet has has extreme ramifications for our society over the past 15 years. I remember when we first got a computer. I was in 2nd grade and it looked like a type writer. In 4th grade, we got a Mac and signed up for CompuServe. Soon after, we signed up for AOL. At the time, I used it to get news, play games and, in middle school, for AIM. At the time, it was purely for pleasure and recreation. But now, some years later, it has become a full-on necessity. If not for the internet, I wouldn’t be able to do my school work, keep up with my friends, read the news on a regular basis, discover new music, or write this blog for everyone to read right now. And with the advent of sites like myspace, facebook and others, people can create personal websites for their friends and family to see and share pictures and video instantly. Also, we are now beginning to use Wifi and Bluetooth to sync different gadgets together with our cars, tvs, computers and even houses. I think that right now we are only scratching the surface and in the coming years we will truly realize the potential of such an endless universe.

Hey, here’s something I bet you didn’t know:
